Heartsong fundraiser
Staffers from Salon Surreal, 4497 Columbia Road in Martinez, along with volunteers from Heartsong Animal Rescue appeared on WJBF-TV to promote a fundraiser for Heartsong to be held Friday from 3-7 p.m. at the salon, with a free microchip clinic, raffles, vendors, prizes and pets available for adoption. Election date picked to be quick
So, it seems, we'll be headed to the polls in less than two months to fill the unexpired term of the late Probate Judge Pat Hardaway. Interim Judge Alice Padgett, who served a year and a half under Hardaway as associate judge, made the call Monday after consulting with other county officials and Elections Director Debbie Marshall.

When school is out, work is still on
Harlem Middle School Principal Carla Shelton says just one student, in one demographic subgroup at the school, scored too low on the math portion of the CRCT, so the school failed to meet the federal government's Adequate Yearly Progress standard. The end? Hardly.

Rec registration: The Columbia County Recreation Department will hold fall sports registration through Aug. 5 for football, softball, soccer and baseball. Football for ages 6-12 costs $85. Middle school football players cannot play in recreation leagues. Softball for ages 7-11 costs $70. Soccer for ages 5-18 costs $65. Baseball for ages 7-15 costs $70.

Striders' dedication to training pays off
