A Martinez church is inviting young children to celebrate the birth of Jesus with a birthday party.

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 3703 Old Petersburg Road, will hold its third annual Birthday for Jesus from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday.

"It's trying to help our kids understand from a childlike perspective ... that Christmas is really about Christ's birth," said Jason Schultz, the church's family minister. "A simple way to bring that down to their level is to celebrate Jesus with a birthday party."

Children will learn about Jesus' birth through storytelling, crafts and games, Schultz said.

Children will also be given "passports" to tour areas of Bethlehem and visit the manger where Jesus was born. Schultz said the manger scene will be depicted in a realistic way to help children understand truths of the Bible.

"Our Lord of lords came to a very lowly and humble place, not a place like a normal king would," he said.

After singing Happy Birthday, guests can indulge in a birthday cake or cupcakes.

The free event is aimed at children ages 2 to 10, and parents are asked to stay at the church.

Schultz said about 100 people attended last year. He encourages those planning to attend to call the church by Thursday.

"It's just something that has been real well-received and we try and have a lot of fun," he said.
