Back in 2003, I did a column where I compiled an all-county baseball team from the previous 20 years. From 1983 to 2003, there were a ton of great players in the county, perhaps as much as any county in Georgia during that span.
//
I was looking over that column recently to get some information on a former area player and wondered how a basketball all-time, all-county team might look.
We certainly have not had the same amount of talent in basketball, but there have been a few great players. It would be tough to do an all-time team because of the lack of records, and I did not have a first-hand account of any players before the mid-1980s, so I came up with a few players to start.
But I need some help. Over the next few weeks, I will be going through statistics and box scores and interviewing coaches in an attempt to comprise a list of the county's best basketball talent over the past 25 years.
There are a few no-brainers: Greenbrier's Eric Marshall, Lakeside sharpshooter Matt Scott and former Evans point guard Fredie Williams. However, to get the most deserving players included, I need some assistance.
If you would like to nominate a player, simply follow a few simple rules:
The nominees must have played in the past 25 years.
Nominees had to have played for a Columbia County school.
Nominators should be as detailed as possible when describing why the player is deserving of the honor.
I will likely have the list completed in January, so please get those names in.
If you would like to nominate coaches or specific teams, that is fine, too. Just compile your info and send it to ab@wrdwam.com.
I will also name a readers' choice award to the player who garners the most nominations.
