A question I often get is whether garlic can be grown in our area, and the answer is yes.

Grovetown leads off holiday parades
The city of Grovetown will lead off the celebration with its 36th annual parade at noon Saturday. The parade will run 1.6 miles along Robinson Avenue from Summerfield subdivision to the intersection of Wrightsboro Road, said parade organizer Laura McManus.

ASU gallery named for arts supporter
For 25 years, Mary Byrd has provided scholarships for Columbia County students attending Augusta State University to study art and music. To honor her longtime patronage, Augusta State University recently renamed a gallery for Byrd.

Officials consider park fee changes
Columbia County officials took steps last week to raise revenues earned from government-operated facilities. New services might be offered at Savannah Rapids Pavilion, as well as a new fee, but the price of an annual pass for Wildwood Park might decrease.

Signing Christmas Tree will tell story of visit from angels
This year's production of Abilene Baptist Church's singing Christmas tree will differ from previous versions. Members and staff at the Martinez church will transport the audience into biblical times by retelling the story a grandfather tells his granddaughter.

Santa Claus will make several appearances
Three upcoming ceremonies will light up Columbia County for the holidays. Harlem will be the first location to illuminate on Thursday when the city holds its 18th annual Christmas-tree lighting in front of Harlem City Hall at 320 N. Louisville St.

Gutters, downspouts need cleaning on a regular basis
As leaves and pine straw are blown from trees this fall, they are starting to clog gutters and downspouts, which should be cleaned out three or four times a year, according to an online source.

Most people pay up before tax deadline
More than 90 percent of Columbia County's property owners paid their taxes this year by the Nov. 15 deadline.

Brooks, 11, and Bennett, 15, Lemmon spent a weekend fishing for striped bass at Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. They caught their limit both days. Bennett brought in the biggest fish, weighing 24.9 pounds, and Brooks' biggest fish weighed 13.2 pounds.

Time to finish voters' ballots
Judicial races in Georgia are among those commonly referred to as "down-ballot" elections. In Columbia County, 7,000 fewer voters cast a ballot for the Georgia Supreme Court race than in the governor's race. That's why Georgia voters are being asked to come back to the polls on Tuesday.
