A land investment group recently purchased about 272 acres of Appling property near Interstate 20 for development.

TKC Investors LLC purchased property at 1560 Appling Harlem Road from the Clary family for about $2.1 million in September.

"We don't have any immediate plans," said Craig Kane, a partner in TKC Investors. "It's a long-term investment for us.

"We just feel like one day (there) would be some possibilities for some type of development."

Among those possibilities are a civic center, hospital or even an outlet mall, said Kane, who mentioned a retail study in which Columbia County residents indicated they'd like to see that type of commercial development in the county.

Kane said he believes the economy will have to turn around before any developers are interested in beginning a project on the site.

"It's got tons of potential for those types of things" Kane said. "I think that it's going to be at least a couple of years, but we're open for ideas."

Kane said he also anticipates that the Interstate 20 overpass at Appling Harlem Road will be widened in the future.

The land is currently zoned residential-agricultural and valued at $109,406, according to the county Web site.
