The letter from Carl Miller on Oct. 17 assumes that the Columbia County Library director has an ulterior motive in removing John Welch as manager of the Euchee Creek Library, but provides nothing other than that several people liked Welch.
Miller questions the credentials of Mary-Lin Maner as a director of the county's library system, but would she have gotten the job if she was not qualified? The problem is that the criteria for a manager of a Columbia County library has changed to better serve the people of the county.
Sure, he has been their for a long time, but many employees of the county have been there for a long time and do just enough to get by. With the review of some of his work habits, it is plain to see that he just might not be what was needed for the Euchee Creek library branch to grow.
What has Welch done to improve his credentials, such as getting the now-required masters degree in library science? Sleeping (at work), not wearing appropriate clothes, and worse, not making continuous improvement to the Euchee Creek library is his downfall. He is fortunate he was not terminated.
He now has a new challenge with the same pay check as library manager and we will see what he does with this opportunity. I hope it is not taking a nap during lunch.
