Help the cops, not the crooks

Columbia County deputies last week arrested two men after catching them breaking into a car in West Lake.

The amazing part: The two are nephews of a man sent to jail two years ago for breaking into a car in West Lake. Clearly the apples don't fall far from that family tree.

But before we get too many laughs at their expense, keep in mind; their victims had something in common, too: Most of them left their parked cars unlocked, often with valuables in plain view.

This sort of thing drives the cops nuts, and it should. They have a tough enough job catching bad guys; the last thing they need is for residents to put out a welcome mat.

Columbia County is one of the safest places to live in the entire area, but unfortunately our low crime rate seems to encourage a false sense of security.

Don't let it. Lock your doors. Don't leave valuables in your car. Make the job easier for the cops, not for the crooks.
