Bulldogs, Statesboro defy my predictions

Last week: 3-2

//

Season total: 14-7

I had a good night Friday despite missing two games. I had Lakeside pegged to win a close game against Statesboro, and the Panthers appeared to be headed toward a victory. However, the Blue Devils kicked a field goal in the closing seconds for a 26-24 win.

I picked Evans to lose by 10; they lost by 13. I picked Butler to nip Grovetown by three points; the Bulldogs scored with 33.7 seconds left to improve to 4-0 with a 26-21 win.

I must congratulate Harlem. I picked them to lose a close game to Cross Creek, but the Bulldogs pulled out a 14-7 victory for their first win of the season.

Hopefully, I will improve on my 3-2 mark this week.

Greenbrier (1-3) at Lakeside (1-4)

Last week: Lakeside lost to Statesboro 26-24; the Wolfpack were idle.

All-time: Greenbrier leads 8-4.

Last meeting: Lakeside blanked Greenbrier 26-0 last season.

Greenbrier has scored an average of 20.5 points per game and allowed 28.3. Lakeside has scored 16.7 and allowed 21.4.

The Panthers have played an extremely tough schedule with two of their stars out of action.

They will snap their four-game skid this week.

Lakeside 28, Greenbrier 17

Evans (3-1) at South Effingham (2-3)

Last week: Evans lost to North Augusta 23-10; South Effingham fell to Effingham County 35-17.

All-time: This is the first meeting between the schools.

Evans has scored 22.8 points per game and allowed 15. South Effingham has scored 17 and allowed 24.

Evans faced a tremendous team last week, and despite the loss the team showed a ton of heart.

I will gladly pay money to watch Evans' Glen Cassedy play. He is as tough as nails.

Evans 27, South Effingham 16

Harlem (1-3) at Grovetown (1-3)

Last week: Harlem beat Cross Creek 14-7; Grovetown lost a heartbreaker to Butler 26-21.

All-time: This is the first meeting between the teams.

Harlem has scored 5.2 points per game and allowed 27.5. Grovetown has scored 24 and allowed 18.8.

You have to feel for Grovetown head coach Rodney Holder. He and the Warriors could easily be 4-0. They had the lead against Greenbrier, Evans and Butler before losing close games. They should get a win this week.

Grovetown 34, Harlem 13

Augusta Christian (3-2) at Wilson Hall (2-3)

Last week: Augusta Christian beat Hilton Head Christian 27-19; Wilson Hall defeated Pinewood Prep 31-7.

Last meeting: Wilson Hall won 28-18 last season.

The Lions have played well the past couple of weeks, but so has Wilson Hall. It opened the season 0-3 but has won its past two games.

Augusta Christian 33, Wilson Hall 30
