Grovetown Lions Club's upcoming turkey shoot supports charities
Editor: The Grovetown Lions Club will hold our Annual Turkey Shoot fundraising event starting the first weekend of October. This has been one of our major fundraisers for more than 30 years and it usually runs for three months, ending a weekend or two before Christmas.

Week One saw a total of 70 entries with three qualifiers getting eight correct; 12 qualifiers got seven correct. There were 54 entries that did not get at least seven correct, and one entry disqualified for late mailing. Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than Thursday.
Pet Adoption Showcase
These pets are available for adoption from Columbia County Animal Services. For more information, call (706) 541-4077 or visit www.columbiacountyga.gov and follow the links to Animal Services. Adult animals cost $25 to adopt, and puppies and kittens cost $20. Animals must be spayed or neutered. Visitors must wear closed-in shoes to visit the kennel area, which is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. The facility is at 6337 Columbia Road in Appling.
Working at the car wash
Damian Wise, the president of Urban Legendz Car Club, dries a car Saturday during a fundraiser at O'Reilly Auto Parts in Grovetown to raise money for the Sickle Cell Foundation. The car club held the event in honor of Laquontics Gibson, a 16-year-old sophomore at Grovetown High School who is diagnosed with the disease.

Police on Monday arrested a Grovetown Middle School pupil after he threatened school officials while brandishing a kitchen knife.

Justin Salter, 16, a Greenbrier High School student with cerebral palsy, uses an augmentative communication device to talk to students at River Ridge Elementary during a "Walk A Mile In My Shoes Week" visit. His mother, Heloise Salter, watches from the back. Justin has a control pad behind his head and uses his head like a computer mouse to type out messages on his computer.
On Vacation
Frank Spears was surprised by an unexpected visitor while vacationing in Custer State Park in South Dakota. The park visit was part of a two-week trip out West that included some days in Yellowstone National Park, Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota.

Greenbrier High School's Mom's Club and the American Cancer Society will hold the school's first Breast Cancer Awareness high school football game Friday as the team plays host to Richmond Academy.
