School Councils
The South Columbia Elementary School council will meet at 7:30 a.m. in the media center Aug. 24, Nov. 16, Feb. 8 and April 26.

First day of school

A judge granted a bond Thursday for a Martinez man arrested on rape charges nearly two years after a 17-year-old claimed he raped her.

Newsmakers
Jim and Doris Sparks, of Martinez, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 14. Their sons and daughters-in-law, James and Diane, Brian and Judy and Joel and Dora, gave them a suprise party in Lincolnton. A host of friends and family joined them to celebrate the occasion. Brother John Blankenship and wife Pat and sister Lillie Harmon and granddaughter Sarah Grose from the Gauley Bridge, W.Va., area; sister Linda Bor of Fremont, Ohio, and sister Kathryn Clark and husband Sonny from Richton, Miss., all traveled to Georgia to complete the surprise.
