Mercer law degree

Wesley Carr Turner, of Martinez, a 2002 graduate of Lakeside High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. Sammy C. Turner, received the juris doctor degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University on May 1. He graduated magna cum laude. He will be a clerk for the Toombs Judicial Circuit and will work in Thomson.

Elizabeth Leigh Hemphill , a senior early childhood education major at Georgia Southern University, was named to the President's List for the fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters. She is the daughter of Jim and Jan Hemphill, of Evans, and is a 2007 graduate of Greenbrier High School.

Amanda L. Wheeler of Evans received the bachelor of science degree from Georgia Southern University on May 8. She majored in nursing, was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing and graduated cum laude. She has since begun her career as a staff registered nurse at the Medical College of Georgia in the Cardiac Care Unit.

Rachel R. Marks of Evans, graduated from Davidson College on May 16, 2010. She is a studio art major with an academic concentration in premedical studies and earned the bachelor of arts degree magna cum laude. After graduation, Marks plans to work as a technician in a medical office in Augusta while applying for medical school. Marks is the daughter of Dr. Stuart and Susan Marks and is a graduate of Augusta Preparatory Day School.

NSHSS award

William Sessions of Martinez, was selected for the $1,000 National Society of High School Scholars award from among 12,000 applicants for excellence in academics, leadership, and community service and is invited to the NSHSS recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 25, 2010.

Chick-fil-A awards

Chick-fil-A team members John Thomas Powell from Evans and Jacob Cady from Martinez are the newest recipients of the chain's 37-year-old national Leadership Scholarship program. Powell and Cady received the $1,000 scholarships from Chick-fil-A franchised operator John Powell, Washington Road. Powell is studying nursing at Augusta State University and Cady is studying broadcasting media from North Greenville University.
