Host families sought

The Columbia County Recreation Department is seeking host families for teams visiting the area for the Ponytails World Series on July 31 through Aug. 5 at Patriots Park. Ten families are needed to help show the visiting teams around the county and handle several other team needs. Participating families can choose their favorite state team among those still needing a host. Volleyball tryouts

Greenbrier High School will hold volleyball tryouts Aug. 2-4. Eighth-grade girls are welcome to try out if they are zoned for Greenbrier High. Tryouts will be held from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 2 and 4, and 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 3. All girls must have a physical and proof of insurance. Rec registration

The Columbia County Recreation Department will hold registration through July 30 for baseball, soccer, football and cheerleading. The season will start in September and end in November. For information, call (706) 863-7523.

Players wanted

The Columbia County MudCats are looking to organize an 11-Under team for the upcoming season. Players can't turn 12 before May 1. The season runs from August 2010 until July 2011. For information, contact Brian Murphy at (706) 860-4321, (706) 564-4980 or bmurphy@trane.com.

The Columbia County Volcanoes U-11 baseball travel team is looking for two additional players. Players cannot have turned 11 before May 1. The team is looking for serious players with good attitudes. They need to be able to pitch and play as many positions as possible. Practices are held at Riverside Park, Windmill Plantation and Patriots Park. Golf tournaments

Bartram Trail Golf Club will provide an instructional golf clinic for children ages 6-14. The clinic will run from 8-10 a.m. daily and will be held July 26-29. The instructor is Lee Henry. Boating safety

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a boating safety course July 31 at Thurmond Dam Visitors Center, located on Route 221, just on the South Carolina side of Thurmond Dam. Class will start at 8:30 a.m. and be completed by 4:30 p.m. There will be a 30-minute lunch break, and participants should bring their own lunch. The class fee is $35 for an individual and $50 for the entire family and includes a textbook. The Savannah River Sail and Power Squadron (SRSPS) is conducting free vessel safety checks. These are checks of your boat to verify that it has required safety equipment and documentation.
