Host families sought
The Columbia County Recreation Department is seeking host families for teams visiting the area for the Ponytails World Series on July 31 through Aug. 5 at Patriots Park. Ten families are needed to help show the visiting teams around the county and handle several other team needs. Participating families can choose their favorite state team among those still needing a host. Greenbrier High School will hold volleyball tryouts Aug. 2-4. Eighth-grade girls are welcome to try out if they are zoned for Greenbrier High. Tryouts will be held from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 2 and 4, and 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 3. All girls must have a physical and proof of insurance. The Columbia County Volcanoes U-11 baseball travel team is looking for two additional players. Players cannot have turned 11 before May 1. The team is looking for serious players with good attitudes. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a boating safety course July 31 at Thurmond Dam Visitors Center, located on Route 221, just on the South Carolina side of Thurmond Dam. Class will start at 8:30 a.m. and be completed by 4:30 p.m. There will be a 30-minute lunch break, and participants should bring their own lunch. The class fee is $35 for an individual and $50 for the entire family and includes a textbook.
