The Columbia County Cooperative Extension Service will resume its free Gardening at Lunch series today with a program on controlling insects in the lawn and shrubs.

The program will start at 12:10 p.m. in the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center at the Columbia County Library in Evans.
Extension Agent Charles Phillips has led the discussions since the program started in 2002. Attendance has ranged from a handful to nearly 100 people, Phillips said.
"The average attendance is around 30," he said. "We have had as few as 10 and as many as 95."
Discussions last about 11/2 hours. Participants are invited to bring their lunch.
Phillips said topics are determined based on surveys submitted by those who attend. This year's topics include caring for hydrangeas, Aug. 4; fall vegetable gardening, Sept. 1; composting, Oct. 6; plants for shade gardens, Nov. 3; and garden jobs by the month, Dec. 1.
"Attendees will receive the most up-to-date information on the topic," Phillips said. "The session is informal with questions and answers."
