The reminder probably isn't needed for most long-time Columbia County residents, but as noted in today's News-Times, Monday is the deadline for registration to vote in the July 20 primary.
Those who have been here a while likely are a little more aware of how things work, and already will have had ample opportunities to register. Newcomers might not be in a hurry to sign up, however, if they are inclined to wait until the general election in November.
In Columbia County, however, he who hesitates loses the right to choose. Because there are no Democrats challenging for any of the local offices on the ballot this year, voters who skip the primary will miss the opportunity to choose a candidate in commission races. Additionally, a vital referendum to continue the education sales tax appears only on primary ballots; wait until November and you'll miss your chance to have a say in its passage.
Anyone with questions about registration can call the board of elections office at (706) 868-3355. Don't wait and miss out.
