I would like to express my thanks to a Columbia County citizen named David Harriss. During the rain and wind storm at 7:30 p.m. June 10, I was investigating a traffic accident on Harlem-Grovetown Road involving a vehicle and a tree that had fallen in its path.
I had just notified our dispatcher to contact the Roads and Bridges Department to respond to remove the tree when Mr. Harriss pulled up. Without any hesitation, he retrieved his chain saw from the rear of his pickup and began cutting up the tree that had traffic backed up in both directions.
After cutting and removing the tree, Mr. Harriss then went back to his pickup and retrieved a shovel and began clearing the remaining small branches and leaves from the roadway.
This kind of selfless behavior is what makes Columbia County a great place to live and work. He helped the Sheriff's Office and the citizens of this county and deserves our thanks.
