County's population rises
Columbia County, with a gain of 3,783, has increased in population almost 25 percent in the past 10 years to a total of 13,208.
Only five counties of the 17-county 10th Congressional District have increased in population, according to the Bureau of the Census. Those are Richmond, Columbia, Clarke, Hart and McDuffie.
Little League is organized
Columbia County Little League officials met May 16 to organize Columbia County Little League Baseball Inc. Arthur Manus of Grovetown will serve as director.
Manus attended a Little League state meeting in Athens to get permission to have five teams the first year so that Appling could be taken into the Columbia County League. The county's teams now include the Grovetown Dodgers, the Grovetown Red Sox, the Harlem Yankees, the Harlem Braves and the Appling Giants. All games previously played will not count as Little League games.
Girl Scouts hold wiener roast
On Friday evening, at the Grovetown Community Center, the Girl Scouts of Troop 87 completed their year with a wiener roast from 6 to 9 o'clock. Each Scout invited a guest so there were about 30 present. Everyone had a good time.
New Air Force aptitude test
T-Sgt. Jewell C. Burnett, Air Force recruiter, announced a new method of recruitment.
Burnett stated that an aptitude test will be given before enlistment to determine the enlistee's abilities (administrative, mechanical, electronic or general). The results will be used for training and assignment purposes.
