I attended a booster club meeting at Harlem Middle School and was dismayed to learn of the proposed budget cuts on the table at Columbia County Board of Education.

Legacy of Bulldog shortstops
Brothers Darryl James (from left) and Doug James (holding his jersey) and Doug's sons Rusty and Tyler James all played shortstop for Jimmie Lewis at Harlem High School. Doug played from 1978-80 and during Lewis' first win against Richmond Academy. His team won the state title in 1978 and 1979. Darryl played from 1981-83 and won the state title all three years. Rusty played from 2002-05, which included Lewis' 500th win. Tyler played from 2007-10, which included Lewis' 600th victory, also against ARC.

Kool Kafe to close
Betty Kelley is surrounded by some of her current and former pupils in the Kool Kafe at North Harlem Elementary School. She is retiring, so this will be the final year for the cafe, which was operated by her second-grade pupils.

Lakeside places fourth
The Lakeside High School girls placed fourth in the Georgia High School state track meet in Albany, Ga. Competing were Sarah Bowles (from left), Anna Bowles, Brittany Henthorne, Katie Townsend and coach Derrick Myers. Anna and Katie placed first and second in the 3,200-meter finals. Anna's performance was the fastest for all classes in the 3,200 meters, with a time of 10:46. Katie was the second fastest for all classes with a time of 10:52. Their performances ranked seventh and 12th on the all-time girls 3,200-meter list for GHSA competitions. Anna Bowles and Townsend placed second and fourth in the 1,600-meter finals. Sarah Bowles placed fifth in the 800 meters, and Henthorne's eighth-place finish in the shot put helped lead Lakeside to its fourth-place finish, a first for the Lakeside girls.

Evans High baseball champ followed his dreams
During the late 1980s, Evans High School baseball was taking off. The 1985 squad nearly won a state title with three freshmen starting in the infield. That trio of Craig Cassidy (shortstop), Lenny Springs (second base) and Ben Hayslip (first base) led Evans to its first state championship during their senior year in 1988.
