Gilbert awarded Merit Scholarship

Linda Gilbert, a senior at Harlem High, has been awarded a National Merit Scholarship.

Linda is the first student in the Columbia County School System to win a National Merit Scholarship. She is only one of 3,100 graduating seniors in the nation to receive a National Merit Scholarship.

Linda also received the honor of being Columbia County's Star Student, and placed runner-up in the 10th Congressional District of Georgia Star Student competition. Nancy Klemann was named as Linda's Star Teacher.

Both ladies were awarded a seven-day tour of Georgia with other district Star Students and teachers.

Linda plans on attending the University of Georgia to major in either art or math. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Gilbert of Appling and is a member of the Kiokee Baptist Church.

Marijuana plants found; one arrested

A narcotics raid at a residence on Old Evans Road was conducted by Special Investigator Alex Shumaker on April 14.

Shumaker said 100 marijuana plants and approximately 11/2 pounds of marijuana plants were confiscated. One arrest was made pending trial.
