Symphony Orchestra Augusta principal musicians will cover an assortment of classical pieces Saturday during a Columbia County concert.

"It's really fun to be featuring eight of our principals at the orchestra, and it'll really give them an opportunity to shine," said the symphony's executive director, Sandra Self.

The symphony's Woodwind Quintet will perform pieces by Robert Muczynski and Carl Nielsen, and the String Trio will play a Beethoven selection.

Maestro Shizuo "Z" Kuwahara will open the program, Self said.

The audience, she added, can expect to hear a wide range of music.

"That's the beauty of the chamber series, I think, in the sense of it does have a little bit for everybody," Self said.

The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. at Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in the Columbia County Library.

Self said nearly 260 people attended the January concert, and expects a similar crowd at Saturday's performance.

"We're excited about this series because it just keeps building as far as the numbers," Self said.

The March concert marks the final performance of the Columbia County Music Series this season. The music series will not return until January.

The symphony's full orchestra will perform May 8 at an outdoors concert at University Health Care System's Evans campus.

Tickets to attend Saturday's concert cost $20 and can be purchased by calling (706) 826-4705 or by visiting www.soaugusta.org.

Full-time students and members of the military with identification can purchase tickets at the door for $7, if they are still available.
