The Columbia County Orchestra Association will hold its first concert of a new recital series this weekend.
//
"We're pumped for it," said Rob Nordan, the music director of the Columbia County Orchestra Association. "It's different from some of the other things that we've done."
The initial concert to start the series will take place Saturday and feature the brass quintet, Third Horn.
The group of five musicians will play jazz, blues, show tunes and classical music, said Nordan, who plays trumpet in the quintet.
Other performing musicians are Dicky Fallin, trumpet; Andrea Maddox, french horn; Chris Vaill, trombone; and Bill Nordan, tuba.
Both Fallin and Vaill performed for about 20 years with the United States Army Band, Nordan said.
Three other concerts held throughout the year will make up the remainder of the recital series. These concerts include performances by a woodwind quintet, string ensemble and professional chamber orchestra.
"One of the things that we have said from the beginning with our organization is to provide more opportunities for people to hear live music performed," Nordan said. "It's locally produced music for local people."
Nordan originally planned to hold a professional chamber orchestra concert by 2012. A chamber orchestra consists of about 40 players.
After Nordan started organizing the various musical groups and holding rehearsals in November, the formation of the series started to take shape, he said.
"We just went ahead and started to rehearse and one thing led to another," Nordan said.
The brass quintet recital will start at 3 p.m. at the Augusta Christian Schools auditorium, 470 Furys Ferry Road, Martinez.
General admission costs $10. Tickets are free for children, students, music educators, and retired and active military personnel.
