Owens holds open house in Harlem
On Jan. 22, state Rep. Ray Owens held an open house session to gain feedback from citizens and to share news on current house bills.
Owens passed out coffee and doughnuts to visitors while he spoke about topics such as the need for a landfill for Harlem, a land use tax, the sales tax and House Bill 78, which will prevent gasoline distributors from being in the retail gasoline business.
Schools accredited
Principals in the Columbia County school system were presented with their Certificates of Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Columbia County School System is one of the few systems in Georgia to have all of its schools, both elementary and secondary, fully accredited with SACS.
West Side 10k held
The West Side 10 Kilometer run, sponsored by the Augusta Athletic Association, was held on Jan. 22 at the old Lock and Dam Park.
The event drew 30 participants, and Evans Junior High School track coach Gene Strong won first place overall.
Merry McDonald, 15, won first place in the novice group; Richard Christensen won the 17 and under group; Larry Little won the 18-22-year-old group; Gene Strong won the 22-35-year-old group; and Bill Hickman won the 36-year-old group.
