No matter what a high school girl dreams her prom dress to be, Brianna Murphy probably has it.
"Everything you could ever want is in here," she said .
For her senior project, the Lakeside High School senior created Formally Yours, an organization that collects dresses, shoes, jewelry and accessories to distribute to high school girls who can't afford them.
Murphy will host an event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at which area high school girls can pick out a free prom dress and accessories. The event will take place at Crossbridge Baptist Church, 3130 Skinner Mill Road, in Augusta.
Murphy said those interested in a dress need to bring proof they are a high school student. Those requesting a dress may use a school ID card, a report card or a note from a teacher.
Murphy, 18, has amassed more than 400 dresses since she started collecting them in the fall.
Most are floor-length gowns, and gowns are available in a range of colors, sizes and styles.
"In the beginning, I was very worried. But then it exploded," Murphy said. "I never expected to have over 100 dresses, much less over 400. ... The community has shocked me."
Murphy also has collected about 70 pairs of shoes and other accessories, including jewelry, scarves and wraps and handbags.
Murphy said she started the project to help ensure that area high school girls don't miss their prom night or other spring formal because they can't afford a dress.
Murphy got something unexpected out of the project.
"This project made me grow so much," said Murphy, who is very reserved but was forced to speak to strangers about donations, organization and other aspects of the project. "I was very nervous."
Murphy, who said she has always hated public speaking, thinks she'll now be able to tackle her senior project presentation with more confidence.
"Through this, I've learned," she said. "I feel like I will be able to step out and present it without any problems."
Murphy said she hopes to open the doors of Saturday's giveaway event to a throng of girls waiting to pick out their perfect dress. Changing areas will be available to try on dresses.
