Grovetown High School's Malia Kency goes for a shot at the Columbia County Junior Varsity Tournament, held at Grovetown. Grovetown's girls defeated Evans High School 55-10 to win the tournament Saturday.

Spreading the spirit
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members from Evans High School joined with the local organization When HELP Can't Wait to hold a Christmas party for the residents at Westwood Nursing Home. There they delivered presents to 113 residents, each gift containing items such as socks, word puzzles, lotions, bodywash, hairbrushes, handkerchiefs and tissues. Organized by student Kristen Busby, the fundraiser, called Santa's Not Just for Kids, received donations from students at Evans High. Donation jars were distributed to students throughout the school and baked goods were sold to help the cause. Volunteers from FCCLA and the community provided cupcakes for the party. The students raised more than $500. When HELP Can't Wait, a nonprofit organization providing for nursing home residents, donated items such as deodorants, necklaces and greeting cards for the Westwood residents.

Van Pelt honored at swim championships
Ben White had lived in the area only a short time in July before bandmate Haley Elise Van Pelt was injured in a car wreck.
A Columbia County Free Throw contest, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, was held Jan. 16, and Braz Staples was the winner in the 11-year-old boys competition, making a perfect 15 out of 15, plus five bonus free throws in a row. He will be in the district competition Feb. 13.
