New businesses

A grand opening of the Martinez Cleaners' new establishment and Massey's Barber Shop is planned for this weekend.

A building nearly identical to the Martinez Pharmacy has been erected by Kuhkle Construction Co. and will house the dry cleaning and laundry plant formerly located on lower Washington Road.

To celebrate the grand opening, owner Earl Allen is offering a drawing Saturday to give away three prizes of free dry cleaning and is giving away "Wacky Wooden Nickels" as part of the promotion.

Between the pharmacy and the cleaners, Dallas D. Massey has erected a new barber shop. Massey said he will specialize in quality, sanitary work in his three-chair shop.

Tax rates discussed

Tax equalization was discussed at Martinez Elementary School Wednesday night.

Hill Healan, executive director of the Association of County Commissioners, told an audience of approximately 30 persons that in order to provide the services necessary for growth of industry, schools and communities, it is necessary to equalize taxes.

"Most counties that undertake tax equalization programs have three things to correct," Healan said. "Low assessment, high millage and thousands of acres not on the tax books. This is true in almost every county."
