An area magician and storyteller will spread the spirit of Halloween on Wednesday with a program based on classical literature.
Chad Crews will mix in some magic as he tells eerie tales from famous authors, including Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker and Arthur Conan Doyle, said Cindy Welch, Columbia County Library's reference services manager.
"He is going to promote interest in some of the more famous horror and mystery authors," Welch said.
The program is aimed at children and teens in sixth grade and higher. It will take place in the library's downstairs meeting room at 4 p.m.
Welch described Crews as a "magical educator." She said the specific stories that Crews will retell will be a surprise for the audience.
"It's supposed to be more intriguing than it is scary," she said. "I don't think someone should feel concerned about being a sixth-grader who's a little afraid of the dark. I don't think that will scare anybody."
Welch said she hopes those attending the program will have a renewed interest in the featured classical authors as well as reading in general.
"He's just a lot of fun," she said. "He is very entertaining."
No pre-registration is required.
