Former prospects making progress

Posted: Sunday, October 11, 2009

During the past few years Columbia County has had more than a dozen players sign football scholarships. Here is an update on how some of them are doing. I will have another update later in the season.

//

Jonathan Nicely (Evans)

Sophomore WR, North Carolina Central University

Nicely, an All-County and All-State performer for the Knights, has seen limited time this season, playing in two games for NCCU.

The team has struggled going 0-5 so far. Nicely has one catch for 8 yards in his two games this season.

Trey Henderson (Evans)

RS-Freshman CB, Coastal Carolina

The Chanticleers are 2-2 on the season. Henderson, a reserve cornerback who helped lead Evans to a state playoff win in 2007, has played in all four games this season.

He has a pair of tackles and has broken up one pass.

Fred Jones (Greenbrier)

Junior RB, Tusculum College

Jones, who rushed for more than 1,100 yards as a senior at Greenbrier, is a reserve tailback for Tusculum.

The Pioneers are 1-4 this season. They love to throw the ball, with 227 passes compared to just 116 rushes as a team in 2009. Jones has two carries for 11 yards in four games played this season.

Lee Banks (Augusta Christian)

Junior DB, Georgia Southern

Banks led Augusta Christian to the 2006 South Carolina Independent Schools Association state title.

The former Lions quarterback walked on at Georgia Southern back in 2007. Last season he saw time in just two games as a sophomore. This season, the junior defensive back has played in all five games for the Eagles. GSU currently is 3-2 on the season.

A pair of former area standouts will be redshirted this season.

Former Lakeside star Kyle Tudor and Evans product Brandon McCladdie each will get a year of practice and seasoning under their belt and come back next season with four years of eligibility remaining.

Tudor is a linebacker at Division I East Carolina, while McCladdie suits up for The Citadel of the Southern Conference.
