Cross country teams run strong

News-Times publisher Barry Paschal was digging through archives recently when he found this account from the April 26, 1872, edition of The Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel:

//

"Base Ball -- A game of baseball was played on Saturday last at Harlem, between the Southern Stars of Berzelia and the Dolly Varden Club of this city, in which the 'Dollie's' were victorious, and did ample justice to the sumptuous repast served them.

"The game was not as interesting as it should have been on account of the absence of members of both clubs. We understand they will play a ... game during the Floral Fair, and as both clubs will present a good 'nine,' an interesting and exciting game is anticipated."

A box score included players' last names, positions, outs each made and runs each scored. The Dollie's appear to have beaten the Southern Stars 44-39.

Three different Stars players scored a game-high seven runs apiece. But the losing team was done in by its leadoff man, Ansley, who did not score and recorded seven outs.

In case anyone recognizes a name and can make a family connection, the following is the box score (punctuation is original):

Runners to compete Saturday

Lakeside High School's boys and girls cross country teams continue to roll.

Both teams, each ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AAAA, won their division at the Aubrae Gunderson Invite in Conyers, Ga., on Sept. 26.

The Lakeside boys, who have surprised this season to become Marist's closest rival, beat second-place Lakeside-Dekalb by 40 points. The Panthers boys placed five runners in the top 20, led by Sid Vaughn, who finished seventh with a time of 17:22.

Lakeside's girls continued to impress, edging Lovett School by two points. The Panthers' top three runners finished in the top five. Anna Bowles won it with a time of 18:52. Katie Townsend finished fourth in 19:46 and freshman Sarah Bowles took fifth in 19:51.

A week before, on Sept. 19, Greenbrier boys finished seventh in the UGA Cross Country Invitational, a spot ahead of Lakeside.

Wolfpack senior Robert Blackwelder led Greenbrier with a 10th place finish and a time of 17:47. Lakeside's girls finished third in the meet, which featured some of the top competition from throughout the state.

The area's top cross country teams will compete Saturday in the Columbia County Invitational at Blanchard Woods Park.

Volleyball teams set for region

Greenbrier will try to defend its Region 2-AAAAA volleyball title Friday and Saturday at Luella High School. The Region 3-AAAA volleyball tournament will be held Saturday at Evans.
