Art classes being offered for all ages
Columbia County artists young and old can hone their skills through classes offered by the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art.

The institute, located on Telfair Street in downtown Augusta, established a satellite studio in Columbia County in 2005 to better serve area residents.
"Because Columbia County is just as much part of our mission as Richmond County or Aiken or Edgefield or Burke," said Rebekah Henry, the institute's executive director. "So this is just a really good way to get closer to the residents of Columbia County and have some more options available to them class-wise."
Some of the Gertrude Herbert's visual arts classes have started, while others beginning in October and November still are open for registration.
Classes for children and youth include Mommy or Daddy and Me; Art Fundamentals for Young People; Watercolor for Young People, and Drawing ... Seriously! A weekend adult workshop -- Watercolor Portraits from Photographs -- starts Nov. 14.
The remaining classes on the institute's fall schedule will be taught by Evans resident Carol Kelly Dorn in her home studio at 874 Deerwood Circle.
"Columbia County is so full of families, and this is a great way for us to offer children classes out there," Henry said. "That way parents can shuttle their children a little bit closer to home versus driving downtown to Ware's Folly, (the Gertrude Herbert building on Telfair Street) where most of our classes are."
