Because Keep Columbia County Beautiful's electronic recycling event in March was canceled by rain, coordinator Jenny Hinton expects a good turnout for an event Saturday.
//
"Since we were rained out at our last one, we know a lot of people have been waiting on it," she said. "We're expecting it to be a busy day again."
The bi-annual event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Evans Government Center at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive.
Electronic items accepted at the event include computers, monitors and laptops; CD, CD-RW and DVD drives; hard, floppy and ZIP drives; scanners; printers; calculators; cell, corded and cordless phones; pagers; pocket PCs; cameras; servers; routers; hubs; electronic game consoles; answering machines; and printer cartridges.
People also can drop off rechargeable batteries, camcorders, stereos, DVD players and VCRs.
Televisions will be accepted for recycling for a charge of $10.
The following items will not be accepted: wood speakers, washers and dryers or any kitchen appliance, such as electronic and microwave ovens.
Free on-site paper shredding also will be offered.
Hinton said employees with Creative Recycling Systems of Georgia Inc. usually bring a tractor-trailer and two 18-foot trucks to pick up recyclable items.
"Nine times out of 10, we're going to fill them up," she said.
Holding such an event is important, Hinton said, because it allows the items to be reused and kept out of landfills.
"The main reason is it is helping to keep some of those components out of our landfills," she said. "Some of those components do still have the volatile compounds in it."
