Hearing people complain about not having anything to do in Augusta is one of Thom Tuckey's pet peeves.
//
"My focus is to show what there is to do," said Tuckey, the executive director of the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon, which is organizing the ninth annual Community Expo from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at Fort Gordon's Gordon Club.
While there will be some businesses participating in the event, many of those renting booth spaces will be representing Augusta arts groups, museums and historical venues.
"Every museum, Sacred Heart, the Augusta Canal, Woodrow Wilson House. I really want them to know what there is to do. It's a good mix," he said.
About 120 businesses and organizations are expected to participate in the event. Papa John's will provide free pizza, and Coca-Cola will provide its products. In addition, there will be door prizes given away.
"We generally have over 100 door prizes," he said.
Many businesses donate gift cards, gift baskets and other items to be given away at the event.
Not only will there be information about off-post activities, Fort Gordon programs and organizations also will be represented. The public can learn more about the Kendrick Memorial Blood Center; the Fisher House; and the Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs; many of which are open to the general public.
The event is not limited to military families.
"Our target audience is anyone who is new to the area," said Tuckey.
Also, people who have lived in the area for many years but might not know what the Augusta area has to offer could benefit from attending, he said.
Those visiting Fort Gordon should have a photo I.D., vehicle registration and proof of insurance to enter the gates.
