Grovetown should not lament loss

Posted: Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Grovetown High School opened the 2009 football season Friday. Unfortunately, the Warriors had the task of playing one of the premier programs in the Southeast in their own stadium. The result was a 51-0 loss.

Grovetown fans shouldn't hang their heads; Buford averaged 46.7 points per game during their perfect run in last year's playoffs.

While Harlem's and Lakeside's debuts are still a week away, three teams open their 2009 campaign Friday. Here is my first attempt at predicting this year's outcomes. Last season I finished 34-7. Hopefully, I can improve on that this season, and more importantly, let's hope I can predict many wins for our local teams.

Greenbrier at Evans

Last Season: Evans won 7-0

The Knights are coming off a terrific 10-1 season, while the Wolfpack struggled through their 2008 campaign. However, they did so in a brutally tough region. Last season's game was close, and this game should be, too. I think the experience of quarterback Troy Griffth and the explosiveness of Jonathan Finch, Tevin Nelson and Jamerson Turner will be a little much for Greenbrier.

Evans 24, Greenbrier 13

Augusta Christian VS. Charlotte Christian

Last season: Charlotte Christian won 28-0

The Keith Walton era gets under way at Augusta Christian, but they will not ease their way into the season. The Lions will face a talented team that they have struggled with recently.

While Augusta Christian will have plenty of highs this year, I am not so sure this week will be one of them. Freshman quarterback Tyler Roberson will be learning on the fly against a solid defense.

Charlotte Christian 34, Augusta Christian 17

Grovetown (0-1) at Walnut Grove (0-0)

First meeting

Admittedly this pick is a little difficult, akin to hitting a blind tee shot. I really do think Grovetown will have enough athleticism to win a few games this year, and this is one of them. Like Grovetown, Walnut Grove is a new school, so this game is a little better to judge Rodney Holder's team.

Grovetown 20, Walnut Grove 7

Harlem and Lakeside both open their seasons Sept. 4. Harlem will play host to Greenbrier, while Lakeside takes on Evans.
