UGA law graduates

The following students graduated May 16 in commencement ceremonies at the University of Georgia School of Law: Melissa Lang received a Juris Doctor degree with bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees. Lang is the daughter of James and Linda Lang of Martinez and a graduate of Evans High School.
Matt Josephson received a Juris Doctor degree with a bachelor of arts in English and a bachelor of arts in political science. Josephson's school honors and leadership activities include: winner of Georgia interstate moot court competition; notes editor for Georgia Law Review; and he will be a clerk for Harold Albritton, U.S. District Court Judge, in Montgomery, Ala. Josephson is the son of Allan and Jeri Josephson and is a graduate of Lakeside high School.
Dean's Lists
- Brian G. Maleck, of Martinez, a junior majoring in civil engineering, has been named to the Dean's List for the 2009 spring semester at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
- Adriana Logan , a 2008 Greenbrier High School graduate, has been named to Valdosta State University Dewar College of Education Dean's List for spring semester 2009. She has also been selected as a recipient of the 2009-2010 Hispanic Scholarship Fund/Georgia Golf Classic Scholarship Award. Adriana is a sophomore at Valdosta State University majoring in athletic training.
- The following local students were named to the spring 2009 Dean's List at Shorter College: Mary Kate Lollar, of Appling; William Clayton Carswell and Dallas Wade Dickerson, both of Evans.
Dean's Lists
- Lauren N. White , of Evans, has been named to the 2009 spring dean's list at Mississippi College.
- Briana Moody, of Grovetown, was among the 338 students named to the Reinhardt College dean's list for spring semester 2009.
- James Michael Linder, of Evans, was named to the spring 2009 dean's list at Clayton State University.
- Sarah Elizabeth Powell, of Evans, and Michelle Lee Evans, of Grovetown, have been named to the Dean's List for the 2009 spring semester at North Greenville University.
- The following local students have been named to the Dean's List at the University of West Georgia: Chelsea Emma Maxwell, of Appling, Jessica Suzanne Usry, of Grovetown and Jeremy Michael Leaf, of Martinez .
- Jennifer Scott, of Grovetown, has been named to the spring 2009 Dean's List at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
- Wesley Lutes, of Martinez, was named to the Dean's List at Lee University for the spring 2009 semester. He is a senior, majoring in music education. He is also president of The Lee Singers. Lutes is the son of Jason and Nancy Lutes.
- Eleanor Jane Paschal, daughter of Barry and Michelle Paschal, of Evans, and a 2008 graduate of Lakeside High School, was named to the Dean's List for fall and spring semesters at Valdosta State University.
- Ansley Sims and Arthur Moore , both of Evans, were named to the spring 2009 Dean's List at Emory College at Emory University.

- Sumner Riddick Pugh IV , a rising junior, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sumner R. Pugh III, of Martinez, and graduate of Lakeside High School; and Shiv Kumar Sharma , a recent graduate, son of Girish and Sarita Sharma, and a graduate of Augusta Preparatory Day School, were named to the Dean's List at Hampden-Sydney College.

- The following local students were named to the spring 2009 Berry College Dean's List: Courtney Baker, senior, bachelor of arts in English, is the daughter of Walter and Emily Baker, of Augusta; Jillian Long, senior, bachelor of science with a dual-degree in nursing, is the daughter of Timothy and Cheryl Long, of Evans; and Mandi Haroldson, junior, bachelor of science in psychology, is the daughter of Juana C. Haroldson, of Martinez.
- The following area students have been named to the Fall 2009 dean's list at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia: Khrystopher Nelson Dent, Adrienne Marie Harris, Adriana Maria Logan, Brandie E. Maddox, Eleanor Jane Paschal, Ansley Paige Thompson and Stephanie Denise Turner, all of Evans.
- Robert M. Edwards, of Evans, was named to the Dean's List for the spring 2009 semester at Virginia Tech. Edwards is a junior majoring in French in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
- Renee Marie Robbins-Yonkin, of Grovetown, has been named to the spring 2009 Dean's List at Utica College.
- Tyrell Dyson, of Grovetown, has been named to the Erskine College spring 2009 Dean's List.
- Whitney H. Daly , a 2008 graduate (and valedictorian) of Evans High School made the Dean's List at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. Whitney is double majoring in Spanish and English. She is the daughter of Patrick and Jessica Daly of Martinez.
Dancing school
Naomi Hergott , daughter of Colleen and Lonnie Hergott, of Martinez, attended the Chautauqua Summer School of Fine and Performing Arts at Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, N.Y., where she will be studying festival dancing. Naomi will be a junior at Lakeside high school in the fall.
Young Harris grad
Andrew Collin Dixon earned an associate of science degree at Young Harris College. He also was named to the Young Harris College dean's list for spring semester. Andrew is the son of Darryll and Pam Dixon, of Martinez, and the grandson of Pat Dixon, of Martinez, and Alta Wheeler, of Waynesville, Ga. Andrew was recognized for his academic achievements during the Young Harris College Honors Night ceremony, held April 26, when he received the following awards: Eugene Barboza Scholarship Award; "Thumbs Up" award for technical skills in photography; and College Representative of the Year.
University of Vermont graduate
Bradley Heron , of Martinez received a Master of Science degree in cell and molecular biology within the Graduate College during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont.
American Cancer Society Scholarship
Cherelle Claiborne , of Grovetown, attending Georgia Southern, has been awarded a college scholarship from the American Cancer Society. The Society's scholarship program was established to assist childhood cancer survivors in reaching their educational goals.
Emory graduates
The following graduates received degrees from Emory University at its 164th commencement ceremony on May 11: Thomas Hancock , of Evans, son of Thomas and Donna Hancock, received a bachelor of business administration; Sumant Ponnala, of Evans, son of Navin and Rajeshwari Ponnala, received a bachelor of science; Amber Robinson , of Evans, received a master of public health; Ansley Sims , of Concord, N.C., daughter, of Christopher Putt, of Evans, and Stephania Putt, of Seminole, Fla., received a bachelor of arts; and Mona Patel , of Martinez, received a master of public health.
Boston U. grad
Elizabeth S. Sunderland , of Evans, received a master of music in music education during graduation exercises in May from Boston University.
Tulane graduate
Shivani Gupta , of Evans graduated in May as a member of the historic "Katrina Class," those undergraduates who were at Tulane only a few hours when they had to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
Georgia College President's List
The following students were named to the spring 2009 President's List at Georgia College and State University: Evans : Elyssa Sanner; Martinez : Kathryne Boatman, Marcia Cannon, Gisela Colon-Olivieri, Caroline Flake, Lauren Redmon and Christopher Turner.
Charleston grad
Justin Bragg, of Martinez, received a bachelor of science degree in biology at the May 9 commencement ceremony at Charleston Southern University.
Berry graduate
Derek Gebhard , of Evans, majoring in government, received a bachelor of science degree at the May 9 commencement ceremony at Berry College. Gebhard is the son of Kenneth and Linda Gebhard.
Howe Military School award
Cadet Luke George , a fifth-grader at Howe Military School and the son of Ruth George, of Evans, has been awarded a Best Spirit Medal for best all-around attitude in all phases of barracks life. Two cadets from each company are recognized by the Parents' Association. George also made the Principal's List for the sixth six-weeks grading period of the 2008-09 school year.
Brevard honor
Emily Belchyk, of Martinez, has been named to the Honor Roll at Brevard College for the spring 2009 semester.

Alicia L. Simonti , of Evans, received a master of arts degree from Clark University at the May 17 commencement ceremony.

Sarah Stokely, of Martinez, has been named to the President's List at Emmanuel College for spring 2009.
Miami graduate
Sarah Ann Parks, of Martinez, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in architecture May 9 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
National Merit Scholarships
Joel Joseph, of Martinez, Aquinas High School: Probable career field: Medicine, was awarded the National Merit Emory University Scholarship.
Matthew W. Sheen, of Martinez, home school: Probable career field: Engineering, was awarded the National Merit Clemson University Scholarship.
Mercer graduates
The following local students graduated from Mercer University on May 16 during the University's Macon campus commencement. Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue the keynote speaker for the ceremony, which was the University's largest. Perdue also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during the ceremony.
