A specialty toy store in Evans has found a new home less than half a mile from its former site.
Learning Express Toys opens this week in a 2,300-square-foot building across from Club Car at 4158 Washington Road, in the same shopping center as PeachMac.
"We just wanted better visibility," said owner Trey Allen, a Columbia County commissioner. "We just figured it was time to try a different location."
The Boston-based franchise carries educational toys and traditional products, including games and puzzles, developmental toys, arts and crafts kits, books, dolls and stuffed animals.
Learning Express opened about two years ago next to Academy Sports and Outdoors in Evans.
To coincide with the store's two-year anniversary, a grand re-opening celebration, with giveaways and prizes, will be held Sept. 14 at its new location.
Susy Allen, who owns the store with her husband, said many customers have told her the former location was difficult to find.
"We're really looking forward to starting our third year of business in a better location," she said. "I think our customers are going to be impressed at how much lighter and brighter and more open everything is."
Also, new products will be offered, she said.
The number of books on display will be tripled.
"Since Columbia County really does not have a book store, we're trying to sell that niche and do our best to offer more books to our customers," she said.
The store is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The Allens said they initially wanted the store in its new building, but construction delays nixed that plan.
"It's actually where we ... felt like we were meant to be to begin with," Trey Allen said.
