Columbia County residents have an opportunity to sample authentic Bavarian cuisine after the recent opening of Augsburg Haus, a German restaurant formerly of Augusta.
//
"We're happy to move," said owner and Grovetown resident Adolf Hermann. "Plus, we need a German restaurant in Columbia County. I live in Columbia County, and we never had one."
Augsburg Haus opened recently in Liberty Square shopping center, across from the Evans Wal-Mart. The restaurant on Walton Way closed Aug. 1.
Hermann, who receives help running the restaurant from wife, Hazel, and 18-year-old daughter, Wendy, said the 2,800-square-foot building is more up-to-date and larger than their former 1,600-square-foot storefront.
Among the German dishes found on the menu are bratwurst; schnitzel, which is breaded and pan-fried pork; and gulasch, which is beef ragout served with noodles.
Appetizers, salads, sandwiches and several types of domestic and German beer are offered.
Hermann said all meals served at the restaurant are homemade and freshly prepared.
Augsburg Haus first opened its doors in November 2004.
Hermann, who lived in Germany for 27 years and moved to the United States in 1992, said he has always liked cooking and had wanted to run his own restaurant.
He grew up with five brothers and three sisters, he said.
"I'm the youngest, and I always was with my mom cooking," he said. "We had to cook for so many people."
Augsburg Haus will be open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 12:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday. It will be closed Mondays.
Customers, Hermann said, eagerly awaited the restaurant's opening at its new spot.
"A lot of people are so happy," he said. "They can't wait for us to move, because we have a lot of people come from Evans and Martinez."
Carry-out orders are offered at the restaurant and can be placed by calling (706) 667-8181.
