Mascot moved
Four 1980 Evans High School students, Willie McCarthy, Tim Boyer, Michael Wiley and Gary Thigpen, carried the last item to be transferred from the old Evans High School to the new Evans Comprehensive High School on Cox Road.
The last item removed was a recently acquired school mascot, a replica of a knight in armor. It was donated to the school by Roberta Wilson.
County lays off five
Five Columbia County employees have been laid off in a budget-cutting measure by the Columbia County Board of Commissioners.
Major cuts for the Sheriff's Department and the county jail, and 9 percent cuts for most of the remaining county departments, were also approved by the commission during an Aug. 7 meeting on the fiscal year 1980-81 budget.
The employee layoffs and additional budget cuts were made in an effort to restrain from raising taxes.
