Greenbrier High student still in hospital after wreck

A Greenbrier High School senior remains hospitalized after a single-vehicle wreck last week.
Haley Elise Van Pelt, 17, of Evans, was in critical condition Tuesday at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, MCG spokeswoman Denise Parrish said.
The wreck occurred about 8:30 a.m. July 22 on the 5500 block of Hardy McManus Road. It appeared Van Pelt's Saturn Ion ran off the road and she lost control, according to police. The car slammed sideways into a pine tree, pinning Van Pelt inside.
The impact with the tree caved in the driver's door, and it took emergency crews about two hours to free Van Pelt.
Van Pelt is a member of Greenbrier's marching band and was headed to summer band camp at the time of the wreck.

Woman calls police after mailbox blasts and fire
A Grovetown woman called police early Saturday after hearing explosions and discovering her mailbox on fire.
The 42-year-old said that between 2 and 2:30 a.m. she heard two loud explosions. While she was putting out the fire in the mailbox, the woman said, a black Honda Accord drove slowly past her home twice.
Police found the top of an aerosol can lying next to the mailbox and another inside the mailbox. What appeared to be gasoline also was puddled in front of the mailbox.
Thief tried to use card to buy plane tickets
A Grovetown woman told police Friday that someone tried to buy airline tickets with her debit card.
The 42-year-old said she got a call Friday from a Fort Gordon Federal Credit Union representative who wanted to verify a purchase being made on her debit card.
The purchase was for two American Airlines tickets from Los Angeles to Miami.
