When Columbia County students head back to school in a couple of weeks, many will do so with a new lunch box provided through sponsors of the annual Back-to-School Festival.

The annual event, slated for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Evans Middle School, has drawn hundreds of students and their parents in the 10 years that it has been held. The event offers one-stop shopping for information on immunization requirements, before- and after-school programs, bus schedules, school calendars and extracurricular activities.

Amy Johnston, community relations specialist with University Healthcare, said the event is important because it helps prepare children and adults for the new school year. She estimates that between 800 and 1,000 people attended last year's festival.

"Each child that attends will receive a free lunch box," she said. "There is a play area for children; Fort Discovery will have their 'Science to Go' van; and we will also have a donation drop-off area for school supplies for the needy."

Experts with the University Orthopedic Program, University Speech and Hearing and Covenant Pediatrics will be on hand to answer questions regarding immunizations and the three-point screenings.

Information on college planning and tutoring also will be available.

Sponsors of the event include University Hospital, the Columbia County Board of Education, Columbia County Leisure Services, The Columbia County News-Times and The Augusta Chronicle.
