It was such a breath of fresh air to read Barbara Seaborn's column in the July 15 News-Times, "Welcome calm after the Pavilion storm." She points out, "had the commissioners at the time been guided by polls, they never would have pursued the project."

Shoppers can assist needy pupils with school supplies
Parents and pupils shopping for school supplies can donate materials for needy Columbia County pupils Saturday at the county's two Wal-Mart locations.

When some pupils return to classes next month, they'll be greeted by a new person at the helm of their school. Former assistant principals Dietmar Perez and Naesha Parks were elevated to lead their schools, Harlem High and Evans Elementary, respectively.

The Columbia County Health Department will give back-to-school immunizations from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 10 at all three health department clinics.

When it came time to choose his Eagle Scout project, Greenbrier High School student Beau Allen wanted to select one that suited his interests.

Camp Calendar
Petersburg Racquet Club summer camp sessions will run through Friday. The camps run Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. until noon, with swimming offered at the end of each workout. Clinics are open to youths ages 7-18, from beginner to intermediate levels.

Athlete Spotlight: Darin Prazer
Darin Prazer allowed the tears to come in Little Rock, Ark., last month. That was where he won gold in the American Taekwondo Association World Championships. For the 31-year-old, the medal was the reward for more than a decade of setting goals and overcoming obstacles.

Friends kept up with Forrest's career
