Area residents would be fully justified for healthy skepticism regarding the pending construction of a Columbia County campus of Augusta Technical College.
//
After all, it's been talked to death for most of the past decade, and so far the only thing to show for it is a lonely little "coming soon" sign on the side of Horizon South Parkway.
But just as we can hope Lucy eventually will let Charlie Brown kick that football, so can we hope that the campus will eventually be built. It's even easier to believe with a couple of recent developments.
First, county officials recently agreed to spend nearly $600,000 to build the entrance road into the long-awaited Grovetown site. And state officials say construction of the 22,000-square-foot school likewise will begin soon.
Yes, we'll believe it all when we actually see bulldozers motoring and brick-masons mortaring. But unlike the wishful-thinking pronouncements we've learned to take with a grain of salt, the newest announcements have a greater sense of immediacy - not merely "it's going to happen," but "it's happening."
It can't come a minute too soon.
