County water ordinance enacted

Citing a directive from the State Water Control Board that gives the county 90 days to correct water shortage problems, county Commissioner Dillard Watkins announced that the treatment plant must be enlarged. He introduced an ordinance authorizing restrictions on water use in emergency situations.

The ordinance, which commissioners adopted unanimously, establishes permits for filling of swimming pools and water tanks or trucks and provides penalties for violations. County attorney Rowland Dye said the codification will save on attorney fees and reduce litigation fees.

Heifer field day

Approximately 475 heifer breeders from across the nation participated in this year's Georgia Polled Heifers Association Field Day on Saturday, June 18, at Burcole Ranch, located between Grovetown and Evans.

Mrs. Stanley Coley, co-owner of the 400-acre ranch, said of the field day, "It's an annual gathering of polled heifer breeders with the program center on items of interest to cattlemen."

The event consisted of junior and senior heifer shows, the crowning of the new Miss Georgia Polled Heifer Queen, heifer judging contests, speeches, and a tour of the Burcole Embryo Center.

The outgoing queen, Sharon Shepherd of Sandersville, crowned Lynn Matthews of Lincolnton as the new Polled Heifer Queen. Matthews was judged for poise, looks and knowledge of polled heifer breeding.
