Event intends to sow seeds for gardening

Childhood memories often are rooted in summertime experiences.

For many people, those experiences come from tending a garden with a parent or grandparent, from watching a plant grow or recalling plucking a juicy berry off a bush.

Gardening also instills a love of nature and the surrounding environment.

To urge youngsters to take an interest in gardening, the annual Gardening with Kids event, conducted by master gardeners and county extension officials, will be June 3.

The event will start at noon at the Columbia County Library.

Free to the public, Gardening with Kids is open to the first 100 youngsters.

"Richmond and Columbia county area nurseries and Bricko Farms will be donating supplies," Master Gardener Mary Ann Woodworth said. "Augusta-area master gardeners and volunteers will be teaching the children to pot plants in a container that they can take home with them.

"We'll also be sharing other cool information about plants with them."

After the planting, children will be invited to a lunch of hot dogs and drinks, provided by Bruster's/Nathan's Dogs in Evans.

"Each child will be given a gift bag with fun gardening activities to take home with them," Woodworth said. "This event was a huge success last year."

Though walk-ups can participate if supplies are available, advance registration is suggested.
