The deadline to register Columbia County pupils for summer school is Friday.

In the age of No Child Left Behind, Summer school primarily is meant for the hundreds of third-, fifth- and eighth-graders needing a remediation course for the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests.
Summer school for CRCT remediation for third- and fifth-grades starts June 1 and ends June 19. CRCT remediation for eighth-grades will be held June 2-19.
Testing for the reading portion of the CRCT will be June 18, and testing for the math portion will be held June 19. Makeup tests will be held June 22-24.
Third-graders must pass the reading portion of the exam to advance to fourth grade. Fifth- and eighth-graders must pass the reading and math portions to advance.
Numerous July dates have been set for high school juniors needing to retake sections of the Georgia High School Graduation Test.
Testing days are July 13 for science, July 14 for social studies, July 15 for math, July 16 for language arts and July 17 is a makeup testing day. July 15 is the testing day for those needing to retake the Georgia High School Writing Test.
End of Course Test exam dates are July 9-10.
A summer school graduation ceremony will be held July 10.
Greenbrier High will be the location for middle and high school summer school programs. Summer classes for elementary grades will be held at Lewiston and Cedar Ridge elementary schools.
Greenbrier High School Assistant Principal Ed Williams will serve as summer school principal this year and said he hopes to use the experience as a stepping stone to running his own school one day.
