Harlem coaches run baseball camp

Jimmie Lewis and Benjie Moore worked together several summers helping run baseball camps during the 1980s before they realized it was something they should do themselves.

"We got to thinking, 'Heck, we could do this,'" Lewis said. "It would be advantageous to kids around here and maybe our program in the long run."

Lewis, Harlem High's longtime baseball coach, and Moore, a former All-American who has spent his coaching career at Harlem Middle, are in their 23rd year running the Bulldog Baseball Camp.

This year's installment starts June 1.

The money raised from the camp is split among the coaches who run it.

"We just derived a way of making a little extra money," Lewis said. "We pay our coaches real well."

The camp will offer instruction in offense, defense, pitching and field strategy.

The baseball camp is one of many camps available to Columbia County residents this summer. From baseball and football to cheerleading and swimming, there are camps for nearly every athlete.
