Grovetown seeks new judge

Posted: Sunday, May 10, 2009

Grovetown city officials are seeking a new Municipal Court judge after Judge Peter D. Johnson resigned last week.

Johnson, also an area defense attorney, served as associate judge for nine years before being appointed judge in January 2005.

He resigned after a municipal court session Monday, May 4. His resignation was effective immediately.

Mayor George James issued a public apology to Johnson at a city council meeting Monday, May 11, stating that Johnson was never put on probation by the city and resigned of his own accord.

A message left with Johnson was not immediately returned.

The court hears cases involving city ordinance violations and misdemeanor traffic offenses inside city limits.

Associate Judge John Flythe will fill in while the council searches for a replacement for Johnson.
