Proofreaders seem to have become an expendable commodity

Re Barry Paschal's April 1 column, "Lonely lament for language":

Like him, I looked forward to James Kilpatrick each weekend. His observations, "horrid examples" and gentle humor were excellent reminders and teaching tools for anyone with an interest in language usage.

It seems writers should be held to the highest standards, but I've also wondered about proofreaders. Perhaps in the economic hard times newspapers are facing, those positions have become expendable.

I find myself often lost in incredibly long run-on sentences or annoyed by blatant misuses of words and incorrect grammar.

However, I will continue to read and enjoy my daily paper as long as it survives!
