Local store has eco-friendly supplies for cleaning house

Taking care of spring cleaning in an eco-friendly manner doesn't have to be costly.

"The misnomer is that green is more expensive and in the long run, we are cheaper," said Harris Weinstein, the president of The Greenway Store in Evans. "We are having to overcome the misconception that green is more expensive by providing products that are green and work, but also have a good value."

Among the products customers having been coming to the new store for are household cleansers and carpet cleaners.

"The most popular thing in the store is our carpet cleaner," said Weinstein. "Instead of having a traditional carpet cleaning company come in and use non-environmentally friendly products, we rent a machine and sell eco-friendly products."

Weinstein said they rent a low moisture machine that minimizes mold spores. The cleaning products that are used in conjunction with the carpet cleaner kill dust spores and mold spores.

"All of the things that go into a traditional carpet cleaning ... have lots of alcohol in it," said Weinstein, adding that all of his company's products are 'green seal' certified, meaning they have met guidelines to be labeled as eco-friendly.

To keep environmentally friendly cleaning products affordable, The Greenway Store sells a cleaning kit for individuals wishing to become eco-friendly in their household cleaning chores. The kit, which retails for $50, includes a bathroom cleaner, glass cleaner, heavy duty cleaner, floor cleaner and three microfiber cloths.

"All of these products are 100 percent eco-friendly and our bathroom, glass and heavy duty cleaners have a free refill for life guarantee," said Weinstein, adding that his company's goal is to cut nearly one-fourth off of a home's annual household cleaning expenses. "These are three products that need to be repurchased time and again and we feel that by offering the free refill for life, we are helping individuals become eco-friendly."

Weinstein said microfiber dusters are a good value for the money. They can be used wet or dry with or without chemicals.

The store also offers outdoor cleaners, including a deck cleaner, that is safe for both pets and plants.
