With the switch to digital broadcasting scheduled for June 12, Keep Columbia County Beautiful's bi-annual recycling event will give residents a place to discard their outdated and unwanted televisions.
//
"We do expect an influx because of the switch-over," said Keep Columbia County Beautiful Coordinator Jenny Hinton. "A lot of people have used that as an excuse to be able to purchase a better TV. We've had a lot of calls over whether or not they can bring them this year."
Recycle Mania will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the front parking lot of the Evans Government Center, at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive in Evans.
A charge of $10 in cash will be required for those wishing to recycle TVs.
Many other electronic items also will be accepted at the event. These include cell phones; computers; monitors; laptops; CD, CDRW and DVD drives; hard, floppy and ZIP drives; scanners; printers; calculators; cell, corded and cordless phones; pagers; pocket PC cameras; servers; routers; hubs; electronic game consoles; answering machines; and printer cartridges.
Additionally, people can drop off rechargeable batteries, camcorders, stereos, DVD players and VCRs.
Brown, green and clear glass recycling will be accepted, and shredding for residential papers will be available at no charge.
Wood speakers, electric or microwave ovens, handheld kitchen electronics, washers, dryers and any other kitchen appliances will not be accepted.
Creative Recycling Systems of Georgia Inc. will be on hand to collect the recyclables. A similar recycling event will be held in the fall.
"We have the trucks that come down, and we just hope that we're able to fill those each time," Hinton said.
