Perfect SAT score makes Greenbrier teen a STAR

By Lynn Davidson
The McDuffie Mirror

A perfect SAT score garnered a Columbia County student a district honor last week.

Greenbrier High School senior Emily Bragg was named the Region 7 STAR Student at an awards banquet Thursday in Thomson.

"I want to thank my parents and thank God, because I got so lucky," Emily said after the banquet.

Luck had little to do with it. The Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition title is awarded annually to the student who scores the highest on the SAT while remaining in the top 10 percent of their class. Emily scored a perfect 2400.

Each STAR student chooses a teacher whom he or she feels has been the biggest influence as the STAR teacher. Emily chose Tracy Roden, her history teacher. In her six years of teaching, this is Roden's third time to be selected for the honor.

"Obviously, this has been an extreme honor because of the particular student," Roden said. "It was very easy teaching her. She taught herself and I was just around."

Emily is the daughter of Alan and Terri Bragg and plans to attend Georgia Tech in the fall to pursue a degree in computer engineering and international relations. She will go on to compete for the State STAR Student award in Atlanta on April 22.

STAR students and teachers from 13 counties were honored at the annual banquet.

The regional banquet is sponsored by Georgia Power, and the statewide program is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the Georgia Department of Education.
