Evans High School graduate and USC Aiken infielder Ken Raborn was recently named to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference preseason baseball All-Conference team.
The team is voted on by the conference's sports information directors.
Raborn batted .339 last season and finished in the top 10 in the conference in six different statistical categories.
Raborn earned all-conference honors last season as a junior. He finished second in nearly every offensive category to teammate and National Player of the Year Chad Jacobsen.
Raborn was third in the conference in walks, with 51. His 17 home runs were fourth in the conference and he finished fifth in the league in with 69 RBI.
Raborn drove in more than one run in 17 games. His four four-RBI games were a team-best.
He finished the year with 24 multi-hit games. His all-conference season included a 10-game hitting streak.
Correction to youth football site
Blanchard Woods Park and Blanchard Park are different venues, a distinction I tripped over in my Jan. 18 column ("Organization with passion for pigskin getting ready for second season").
The Columbia County Area Youth Football Association will hold its first combine Saturday at Blanchard Park, off Belair Road, not Blanchard Woods Park, which is on Blanchard Road.
CCAYFA board member Gary Yates said last week that he would probably have someone at Blanchard Woods to redirect misinformed players and parents. But for those who read this and know someone planning to attend, let them know of the change.
Here is the information for the combines, which also appears in today's sports calendar:
The Columbia County Area Youth Football Association (CCAYFA) will hold registration for the upcoming spring youth football season for the 9-11 and 12-13 age classifications.
Participants must be 13 years old or younger on Sept. 1. Weight restrictions for the 9-11 age group will be 155 pounds (135 pounds for ball carriers), and the 12-13 age group will have a limit of 190 pounds (160 pounds for ball carriers).
Registration will be held Saturday and Feb. 14 at Blanchard Park from 9 a.m.-noon. Parents are asked to bring a copy of the player's birth certificate and pay a $55 registration fee.
Players will participate in a short workout during registration. For information, call Gary Yates or Buddy Rish at the CCAYFA office at (706) 993-6382.
