Barbara Jean Naugle has been inducted into the Beta Lambda Omicron Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Georgia Military College-Augusta. Naugle, an Appling resident majoring in business, is the daughter of Ray and Evelyn Hatton, of Martinez.

Challenge grads

Four Columbia County teens are among more than 122 youth graduating from the Georgia National Guard's Youth Challenge Academy at commencement ceremonies held in Macon on Dec. 20. Brandy M. Watson of Appling, Quay Shawn D. Cooper and John W. Purper of Grovetown, and Anthony-Michael B. Halcame of Martinez are members of Class 2008-4 of the Fort Stewart-based YCA program.

Model U.N. club

Laura Smolley , a freshman communication major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Smolley, of Harlem, was among 24 students representing Berry College's Model United Nations club to win three awards at the November session of the 2008 Southern Regional United Nations Conference in Atlanta. More than 630 students participated in this conference, representing 73 Model U.N. countries.
